Art has always sought to push back the limits of the medium in which it is displayed. From murals to interactive sculptures and digital artistic, it is constantly reinventing itself.
Today, a new frontier is opening up: that of textiles. What if a garment became a genuine work of art, unique and authentic, combining fashion and artistic expression?
Art and fashion: a history of reciprocal influences
Artistic and fashion have been mutually inspiring for centuries. Haute couture designers borrow from the great masters of painting, and artists in turn play with dress codes to turn them into cultural symbols. Legendary collaborations, such as that between Yves Saint Laurent and Piet Mondrian, or more recently between Virgil Abloh and Takashi Murakami, have illustrated this close link between the two worlds.
When clothing becomes a unique work of art
Unlike designers who draw inspiration for their collections from works of creation, La Toile doesn’t just create clothes inspired by creations: it turns the garment into an artistic piece in its own right. Each pair of trousers in the collection is numbered, signed by the artist and delivered with a certificate of authenticity, as well as a digital identity card guaranteeing its uniqueness. It’s an approach that places these creations in the world of contemporary art and gives them a heritage value.
Behind this idea are Jean Degonde and his team, who want to reinvent the place of creation in our everyday lives. ‘Why should art be confined to museums or collectors‘ walls?’ asks Jean Degonde. ‘We wanted to make it accessible, lively and part of everyone’s life.
Art in everyday life: a new way of expressing yourself
Wearing signed and numbered trousers means taking a different approach to fashion, where clothing is no longer just a utilitarian piece, but becomes a genuine artistic statement. It’s also a way of integrating design into everyday life, taking it out of the gallery and anchoring it in movement, in the street, in personal expression.
