Dune 2 is finally out in France. We had the chance to see it at the Warner Bros. studios. Is it better than the first film? Here’s the verdict !
It’s a historic day for cinema fans! After long years of waiting, you will be able to discover Dune: Part II, which arrives in cinemas in France this Wednesday, February 28, 2024. Initially scheduled for release last November, the film has more than justified the wait. Indeed, director Denis Villeneuve has signed up for the finest cinematic project of his career. More intense, more profound and more majestic, Dune 2 is already the film of the year 2024. We were able to see it before its official release at Warner Bros. And we weren’t disappointed. Let’s get on with our review (warning spoilers).
Timothée Chalamet at the top of his art!
Paul Atreides, played by Timothée Chalamet, returns after the Atreides massacre on the sand planet Arrakis. Determined to avenge the death of his father and family, the young heir prepares to confront the Harkonnen. He allies himself with the Fremen people, who will see him as the ultimate leader they had always hoped for. From a teenager in search of an identity, Paul Atreides becomes Muad’Dib, a man of great maturity with religious as well as political convictions. Timothée Chalamet may be the star of Dune 2, but he’s not the only one to shine. In this film adaptation of Frank Herbert’s novel, Denis Villeneuve leaves room for the other characters and the result is divine.

A five-star cast!
Needless to say, Timothée Chalamet is perfect in his role as Paul Atreides. Rebecca Ferguson, who plays Dame Jessica, Paul’s mother, is breathtaking too. As a widow, she never lets her guard down, and shows character in every scene. But if there’s one actress who’s made an impression throughout Dune 2, it’s Zendaya. Rest assured, the woman who slips into the role of the warrior Chani is much more present in this second episode. Her duet with Timothée Chalamet is powerful, and the two actors literally complement each other. The kissing scene, which everyone has been waiting for, is right on target. Denis Villeneuve has chosen the winning combo!
Another actor who stands out: Austin Butler! In Dune 2, the American actor takes on the role of Feyd-Rautha, Vladimir Harkonnen’s nephew. A far cry from his role as Elvis Presley in the biopic released in 2022, Austin Butler delivers the finest performance of his career. He’s scary, mysterious and mesmerizing! His introductory scene is epic, and will go down as one of the film’s most grandiose. In short, 20/20! The only downside is that we’d have liked to see more of him.

Last but not least, Denis Villeneuve has given us his very best in terms of special effects and sets. The planet Arrakis is a thing of beauty. The shots, the silhouettes, the photography – everything is so perfectly realized that it’s impossible to take your eyes off it. If the third part isn’t due out until 2025, we wonder how the Canadian director will ever top it. So go and see Dune 2!
