On 19 December, we saw Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom at the premiere. Here’s what we thought!
Five years after the release of the first film, Aquaman (Jason Momoa) made his comeback on the big screen on Wednesday 20 December 2023. We were able to attend the premiere, which took place in a French cinema the day before. Once we had settled in, we immersed ourselves in this second opus, still directed by James Wan. In The Lost Kingdom, Black Manta (Yahya Abdul-Mateen II) becomes the fearsome antagonist, with just one thought on his mind: revenge for the death of his father by killing Aquaman. He is armed with the Black Trident and ready to do anything to accomplish his task. Aquaman has no choice but to reunite with his brother Orm (Patrick Wilson), who has been stripped of his title of King of Atlantis. They work together to save their kingdom and defeat Black Manta.
Jason Momoa is in!
As Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom wasn’t heavily promoted, we didn’t know what to expect. From the very first minutes, the tone is set! Jason Momoa is delighted to slip into his hero’s costume once again. The American actor, true to form, had no shortage of charisma and charmed us as a doting father. Yes, Arthur Curry becomes the proud father of an adorable little son, who is kidnapped by Black Manta.
Amber Heard in the background
The appearance of Amber Heard, who plays Mera and Aquaman’s wife, has raised many questions. Despite the controversy surrounding the actress, she is keeping her role. She is seen throughout the film, but her character doesn’t have enough depth… Some of her scenes were probably cut in the editing process.
Patrick Wilson was a nice surprise, doing his job well as an actor. We liked the duo of brothers, who bring good energy and a lot of amusing scenes. The other positive point is certainly the arrival of new creatures that are as fascinating as they are frightening. They provide an impressive and enjoyable visual spectacle.
A simplistic script!
Nevertheless, the weak point of Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom is certainly its script. It’s far-fetched and full of inconsistencies. Some scenes are exaggerated, notably because of the poor special effects, and it’s easy to lose track at times. And although Yahya Abdul-Mateen II is an excellent actor, he doesn’t play the antagonist of the century. Moreover, the death of Black Manta left us wanting more. We would have preferred a fight from start to finish.

Despite everything, the film manages to keep us entertained, and we never see the two hours go by. Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom‘s imposing sets and sumptuous costumes make it easy to watch, but it won’t go down in history.
