Summer is often associated with heat and scorching spells. And we all know how unpleasant it is to feel sweaty. Clothes are heavy and stick to your skin. But there are a few good practices that can make our summer lighter.
We do it all the time: as the holidays approach, we buy summer clothes at the drop of a hat, without worrying about the quality of the fabric or the cut. And yet, if we were careful to select clothes suited to the heat, our bodies would be very grateful.
Fabrics adapted to the heat
To keep cool in summer, it’s essential to opt for breathable fabrics that allow air to circulate. We’re lucky enough to have a wide range of heat-resistant fabrics to choose from, so it’s time to take a look.
- Linen: with its light, airy texture, linen is undoubtedly the most pleasant fabric to wear in summer. It’s also highly breathable and quick-drying, which is great for a smaller suitcase.
- Cotton: air circulates well and the skin stays dry thanks to good moisture absorption. What we particularly like about cotton is its softness and lightness.
- Hemp: similar to linen in terms of properties, but this fabric is renowned for its durability and, above all, its increased role in the quest for greener fashion.
- Bamboo: little-known and harder to find, it is excellent at absorbing perspiration as well as having antibacterial properties.
- Semi-synthetic fibres: rayon, modal and tencel. All three are made from cellulose or cellulose-derived fibres, and are designed to help the body withstand the heat.
A few additional tips
To maximise your chances of feeling good on a hot summer’s day, there are a few tips to bear in mind. All you have to do is apply them in conjunction with the right fabric, and you’ll never have to suffer in the heat again.
The first tip is to choose loose-fitting clothes. This allows air to circulate more easily and helps to keep the body cool. Loose-fitting clothes often go hand in hand with “no style”, especially for women, but there are dresses, jumpsuits and even loose-fitting trousers that are extremely stylish. All you need to do is choose a cut to suit your body shape and accessorise with pretty sandals and trendy jewellery.
It’s often overlooked: the colour of the garment. And yes, it is strongly recommended to wear light colours in summer. The reason is quite simple, and most of you know it. Unlike dark colours, which absorb sunlight and therefore heat, light colours reflect it. Take note!
Finally, we have one last piece of advice for those of you who feel naked when wearing clothes that are too light. It might seem contradictory, but it’s perfectly sound. Instead of wearing a garment that’s too thick for the season, it’s preferable and above all more comfortable to wear several light, breathable layers. Try it, you’ll love it!
