“I’m back, it’s official!” exclaims SHAY in her new track “DA”.
Since her last album, Antidote, released in 2019, and apart from a few high-profile appearances (the cover of Japanese Vogue in May 2020 and campaigns for the Burberry brand for which she was the muse) the Brussels rapper had given very little musical news. Today, at the head of her label Jolie Garce Records, she has sounded the death knell of an absence that tended to be too prolonged.
Composed by Josh and Nostra (PLK, Leto, Tiakola, Koba, Ninho, Alonzo…), DA is accompanied by a video directed by Guillaume Doubet who had already signed the image of her previous album. The careful and futuristic inspiration, dear to the rapper, accompanies the instrumentation with a formidable minimalist efficiency and reminds us of films such as Ghost in the shell or Ex machina.
Once again, Shay is the star of the show, almost alone. “DA” (“yes” in Russian) confirms that she is one of the greats and also designates a new D.A. (artistic direction) that the artist has chosen. (artistic direction) that the artist announces as innovative and explosive. Since 2016 and the release of her first album, it should simply be noted that she is the only woman in the game to have obtained a gold record. With “DA”, Shay confirms that she wears her chosen pseudonym in the rap world better than ever: the one who brings the light.
This new track undoubtedly heralds a forthcoming album. But while we wait to hear more of the Belgian artist’s songs, she will soon be joining SCH and Niska on the jury of Nouvelle École, the French-language adaptation of the music show Rythm and Flow, broadcast on Netflix.
