A pagan tradition for some, a folk festival for others, Halloween, the famous international party, is just around the corner.
Many of us are into costumes and festivities, but let’s not forget the more homebound among us. If you’re a fan of drama or angst, here’s our Netflix selection of horror films and series. Watch them alone or with friends on 31 October!
The different types of horror films and series on Netflix
The slasher category
For those who love the adrenaline rush and stress of serial killers (Halloween, American Nightmare, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, Slasher). Since the 1970s, films have featured psychopaths in pursuit of their victims, often with knives.
“Chainsaw Massacre” is the slasher legend. The most macabre family in Texas has been followed for nine sagas. This new version is presented as a sequel to the very first, featuring Sally, the main character from 1974. But almost 50 years after his murderous rampage, Leatherface still hasn’t said his last word, and the new generation is about to find out. This film is inspired by a true story… If you have a sensitive soul, don’t watch it!
The torture category
This is for voyeurs who take pleasure in watching others suffer (Hostel, A Classic Horror Story, Dahmer). These torture films are all about blood, gore, pain and the screams of the victims.
As we’ve always told you, getting into a car with strangers is very dangerous! The main character, Elisa, gets into a camper van with a group of four people. Unfortunately, the driver has had an accident on the road after drinking too much… When they see a house that looks like it’s already occupied, their waking nightmares begin.
The undead category
For those who like mortal comebacks, (Shaun of the dead, All of us are dead, Army of the dead) types a virus that has invaded the town contaminates the entire population or the dead become zombies who wake up like in the King of Pop’s “Thriller” video.The film takes place in Nevada, where Zeus, a zombie, attacks soldiers. Contamination quickly spreads and the area is quarantined. A billionaire calls in mercenaries to eradicate the zombies, but above all to recover the 200 million dollars.
Will the group manage to get out of Las Vegas alive with the promised reward? And would you be prepared to put your life in danger for the lure of the prize?
The paranormal category
For demonic spirits with a penchant for unexplained, unsolved cases and moving objects or people (conjuring, The Fall of the House of Usher, Case 39, Nobody gets out of here alive.). The poltergeist is a phenomenon that has always fascinated society, the desire to know what lies beyond reality and after death.
Survival demands sacrifice, and Ambar, a young student who has come to live her American dream, is about to find out. Faced with financial difficulties, she takes a room in a all-women boarding house. From there, she and her flatmates realise that unseen people are leaving their mark. What follows is a chase and a fight for Ambar’s life, because in the end no one gets out of here alive…
The happy endings category
For those who need reassurance, because we need happy endings in this world full of horror and true stories (fear street, Get out, Nobody sleeps in the woods tonight). This is the American speciality, where we see our hero suffer for the whole of the script and end up surviving.
Welcome to Shadyside, where brutal murders, corruption and evil forces reign supreme. A group of teenagers decide to fight for their town and the safety of the population, risking their lives in the process. It’s a mix of the slasher and supernatural, where sometimes to solve the problems of the present and secure your future, you have to go back to the past.
