Finally, the big day has arrived: Challengers comes out in cinemas on Wednesday 24 April. Does Luca Guadagnino’s film live up to our expectations? We tell you all about it!
This year, 2024, is all about Zendaya. Barely two months after shining in the role of Chani in the second part of Dune, Zendaya returns to our screens in Challengers. Directed by Luca Guadagnino (Call me by Your Name), the 27-year-old actress plays Tashi, a tennis player at the peak of her career. Despite herself, she finds herself at the heart of a love triangle that is as bewitching as it is destructive. For our part, we are drawn into an emotional whirlwind in which tennis becomes the stage for a complex plot.
A torrid love triangle
For Challengers, Luca Guadagnino continues his exploration of human relationships and inner torments. While his previous film, Bones and All, plunged us into an almost horrific love story in a dark setting, Challengers takes a much brighter turn with the ‘sunny’ world of American tennis. Yet behind the glittering facade of the courts lie toxic romances that capture and disturb.
Tashi embodies the quintessence of power and seduction. Her meteoric rise in the world of tennis attracts the attention of two men: Art Donaldson and Patrick Sweig, played by Mike Faist and Josh O’Connor respectively. As soon as the three protagonists meet, a love triangle is created, tinged with manipulation and unfulfilled desires. Tashi juggles the feelings of her suitors, using their affection to serve her own interests.
Tennis, that beautiful sport!
Beyond the love story, Challengers celebrates the beauty of tennis. The matches are filmed with a rare intensity. Each exchange of the ball becomes a metaphor for the feelings of the characters. Luca Guadagnino’s camera captures the grace and power of the athletes on the court, transforming each match into an almost spellbinding performance. The final scene had us spellbound from start to finish! With its close-ups, slow-motion shots and low-angle sequences, it was a sight to behold.

Zendaya on top of everything!
For a long time confined to roles as young students, Zendaya is emancipating herself, and the result is breathtaking. She shines in her acting scenes, and her presence even becomes magnetic. Special mention must go to Mike Faist and Josh O’Connor, who fit perfectly into their very different characters. Choose between the ideal son-in-law with a calm temperament and the Don Juan who uses his charms. But together, the three actors form a captivating trio, the likes of which we’ve rarely seen.
