It’s finally here! Seven years after Matt Reeves’ last film, Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes was released in cinemas on Wednesday 8 May. Does it live up to our expectations? Here’s our verdict!
Fans of the saga have been waiting for it for years! Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes hits French cinemas this Wednesday 8 May. Since its first film adaptation in 1968, the franchise has fascinated millions of spectators around the world and generated no less than 2 billion dollars at the box office. The adaptation of Pierre Boulle’s novel has managed to reinvent itself time and again, thanks in particular to the work of director Matt Reeves, behind the last two opuses, released in 2014 and 2017.
A sequel after the era of Caesar
For Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes, Twentieth Century Studios and Disney have called on Wes Ball, best known for directing The Maze trilogy. This new chapter takes place 300 years after the events of Supremacy, marking the end of the era of Caesar, the original ape. Although Caesar is no longer present, his influence is indisputable. As well as paying tribute to Caesar, this episode explores the complex relationship between humans and apes, which has evolved enormously. They all know how to speak, express their emotions and live completely independently.

Sensational characters thanks to a four-star cast!
At the heart of the script, we find complex and endearing characters who evolve over time. Noa, Caesar’s brave successor, metaphorically embodies the fight for freedom and justice in a world dominated by tyranny. He is brilliantly played by Owen Teague, a young actor we are bound to hear a lot more about in the years to come. Standing opposite him is Proximus, the new film’s charismatic and fearsome antagonist. Behind this cheeky monkey is Kevin Durand, who delivers one of his best performances. But that’s without counting on Maé, played by Freya Allan, a human who falls into Caesar’s path. Far from being innocent, this character surprises us more than once. And if you had to have a huge crush on one character, it would unquestionably be Raka, played by Peter Macon.

Wes Ball’s direction and special effects are masterful. From the very first minutes, we are transported into a world where the boundaries between reality and fiction almost disappear. The wide shots are spectacular, and the visual class is there for all to see. The action scenes are second to none. Let’s just say that Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes is a cinematic success. Lasting over two hours, it (clearly) doesn’t let time pass and leaves you wanting more. The unexpected ending will leave you speechless with emotion. Fingers crossed for a sequel!
