Power Women Group (@powerwwomenkibera) is a coalition of women living with HIV who own a clothes and jewelry making business in Kibera slum, Kenya. They formed the group in 2004, having met at a clinic where they were getting medications for their children, also HIV-positive. Seeing that there was a lot of HIV stigma in the slum, they started an awareness campaign, going door-to-door to teach people about HIV.
Eventually, they opened a shop to support their families and show that people living with HIV can live productively. COVID-19 has been challenging as sales have decreased due to slowing tourism in Kenya. Also, they feel vulnerable to the virus due to their HIV status – thankfully, none of them have become ill.
