Durag is a fashion accessory that combines aesthetics, practicality and originality. Deeply rooted in Afro-American culture and black pop culture, it is a true symbol of emancipation and pride. It is also a piece of fabric that is widely used in the world of hair care, especially to obtain the famous “waves”, one of the most popular hair styles among African-Americans.
Today, more and more people are making it the central element of their clothing. Indeed, whatever your taste in clothing style, durag can give you a very special touch of elegance if you use it correctly. Find out in this article how to wear it and what to wear it with.
What are the different types of men’s durags ?
There are a multitude of models of durags for men. Some of the most popular and symbolic ones include :
- The black silk durag;
- The fluorescent polyester durag;
- The velvet durag;
The black silk durag is the most common form of durag at present. Classic and timeless, it is particularly suitable for people who like sober outfits and do not want to take a lot of risks. It can be found on all platforms such as Durag-Shop, which specialise in the sale of durags. Most fashion accessory shops also offer it.
There are also sober durags in other solid colours such as white, red, green and blue… They are suitable for men who want to be original without “breaking the code”. Like black, these colours have the advantage of being able to easily match your clothes without being eccentric.
Fluorescent durag is much rarer because it is very daring. It is suitable for people who appreciate unique clothing and flashy accessories. Very original and eye-catching, this durag brings colour and shine to summer looks. It comes in a multitude of colours: orange, purple, pink, gold and sometimes multicoloured. The velvet durag is an accessory that combines luxury and comfort. It is perfect for sophisticated and chic looks. It is one of the most fashionable durags currently. In addition, modern durags come in a multitude of attractive designs: two-tone, floral, camouflage…
How to wear men’s durag ?
To wear your durag, position yourself in front of a mirror to get a good view of the result. You can choose between the following three methods.
The standard method
To tie your durag in the classic way, you first need to identify the central seam of the fabric. You will then position the fabric on your head according to this seam. The place of the seam should be in the centre of your head in the same line as your nose.
The front edges should be placed of the fabric between the eyebrows and the hairline, making sure that the hair is well covered. This will strengthen the fixation of the durag. Once this first step is successful, take the strings with each of your hands and run them over your ears to the back of your head and cross them in an X pattern.
Then bring them back to the level of your forehead so that they also form an X before turning them back and tying them. Throughout the process, it is important to keep the ropes flat so that they don’t curl. This will give a truly aesthetic result.
The side method
The lateral method is also a trendy way of attaching the durag. The process is approximately the same as the one we have just presented, with one difference. In fact, once you have reached the X-crossing stage at the forehead, instead of bringing the ropes back to the back to tie them, you can tie them together on any side of the face. The knot will then be clearly visible.
The front method
Other people prefer to tie their durag at the forehead. If this is the case for you, follow the same method as for the lateral one, but instead of tying the cords on the side of the face, do it on the forehead. As far as the knot is concerned, you are free to vary the styles according to your preferences.
What to wear durag with ?
This accessory is generally suitable for all styles. Here are some useful tips to enhance your looks with this trendy accessory.
Basic style
For a sober style, you can wear your durag over a white t-shirt, wide jeans and trainers. This can be embellished with some simple and elegant jewellery. It is also possible to wear a durag over a pair of trousers with a clip on, a t-shirt (to be stuck into the trousers) and a pair of trainers. You can choose your socks according to the colour of your durag.
A final tip: avoid combining durag with jogging style. These codes have been a thing of the past since the 90s.
Hip-hop style
Durag and the world of hip-hop are closely linked. Indeed, this accessory was the symbol of the emergence of hip-hop culture in the 1990s. For many years, several rap figures proudly wore it with style: 50 cents, JayZ, Snoop Dogg… Famous rappers of the new generation also continue to wear it, such as Ski Mask the Slump God…
If you’re a fan of this style, you can combine your durag with the typical hip-hop culture clothing such as very wide, colourful trousers and disproportionate trainers. Don’t hesitate to try the flashy durags to add some pep to your style.
Luxury style
Durag can also be adapted to a sophisticated style. For example, you can combine it with very trendy urban clothing, sewn in noble materials such as corduroy or pleated linen. For this style, prefer durags in not too bright colours, preferably pastel.
You now know which durag to choose according to your clothing preferences. Whichever model you choose, make sure you tie it tightly to achieve an aesthetic result. Above all, the most important thing is to adopt a style that suits you.
