If the balaclava made its appearance again in 2021, it was during the autumn/winter 2022 fashion week that it was an immediate success. Far from being a ski accessory, the balaclava is essential for winter cover-ups for the coldest ones !
The origins of the balaclava
Originally called “balaklava”, the balaclava appeared in the 1980s during the Crimean War. British soldiers wore them to protect themselves from the cold and avoid gangrene. Over time, the balaclava became a fashion accessory.
However, the balaclava was denigrated for many years and only came out of the wardrobe for ski trips. Nevertheless, the confinement and the fact of wearing a mask all the time got the population used to having part of the face covered. A detail that has not escaped the attention of fashion designers who have transformed it into a variety of accessories on the catwalk !
The most fashionable accessory for this winter 2023
The balaclava has become our trendy ally against the falling temperatures and can be worn with everything ! Sometimes minimalist, sometimes in pop colours, sometimes customised with jewels, the balaclava has a new look and adapts to all styles ! Moreover, less bulky than before, it is an accessory likely to last on the fashion planet because of its handmade creation.
Through this trend, it is undeniable that we are seeing a resurgence of the Slavic trend. The straight, simple and minimalist lines of the Russian aesthetic are more than ever a source of inspiration for designers, a kind of melancholy !
The war on the catwalk
Among art directors, the balaclava is invented, deconstructed and reinvented. At Loewe for autumn-winter 2022-2023, the heart cut-out balaclava makes its appearance. We see the flashy balaclava/cap at Jacquemus and more sober at Givenchy. At C.P.Company it is integral but has two big fly eyes so you can see and at Marine Serre, waterproof, it is ideal for all your outdoor activities.
Whether it’s full-length or cut-out, the balaclava is the new trendy and durable accessory in the fashion world.
