A bar of soap is a staple of any bathroom, but there’s been a new move to other solid beauty products like shampoo and conditioner in order to reduce plastic waste and water usage.
The environmental impact of solid shampoos and conditioners
There are many pros when it comes to shampoo and conditioner bars and the environmental impact seems to outweigh the change in beauty routine.
There are many brands changing their approach to beauty packaging like L’Oreal, along with other beauty brands that have been selling solid cosmetics and beauty products for decades. Lush was founded in 1988 and have been selling solid shampoo and conditioner since then and are known for their zero-waste packaging and other solid and natural products.
The environmental impact of solid shampoo and conditioner is great when it comes to decreasing plastic waste, water usage and water transportation. Water is a main ingredient in shampoo and conditioner, solid options eliminate the usage of the excess water. When comparing the usage of water in a liquid shampoo bottle to a solid option, there is a large difference. Using a bar of shampoo instead of a 350ml bottle of shampoo eliminates 1.9 liters of water.
The advantages of solid cosmetics
Packaging for solid beauty products is also better for the environment because it needs less wrapping, or none at all.
Another pro of using solid beauty products is that they last longer. Solid shampoo has more potent amounts of the active ingredients so they last for more washes.
They also use more gentle cleansers, butters and oils in solid shampoo and conditioner and may be more sensitive on your hair.
Since solid beauty lasts longer it is more cost efficient and also better for the environment because you have to buy less. Some people have embraced this change in beauty routine to help the environment and to also save money, but it’s unclear if there will be a larger and more mainstream shift to solid beauty products.
