The Chinese brand Shuting Qiu decides to present its fall-winter 2021 collection by joining the Milan fashion week. After debuting in 2019 in the Italian fashion capital, it returns there even if virtually with a fashion film that wants to be a bridge of connection between Asia and Europe. Art women are the main inspiration.
The pandemic has created a huge gap between China and Europe. So the choice to return to Milan is an attempt to reconnect the two worlds. This is the desire of the young designer Shuting Qiu who celebrates Chinese tradition. A film, Water Ripples, entirely turned during the celebration of New Year’s celebrations in her hometown, Hangzhou. In continuity with previous collections, inspiration comes from two artists: Swiss Miriam Cahn and Italian Viola Lanari.
The body is a battlefield for Miriam Cahn. In her paintings the nudity of bold and fluorescent bodies emerges from the social slumber, which is grey and without a future. So in the collection the eye is guided by strong contrasts of a bright palette. Vibrant tones of yellow, electric blue and fuchsia contrast with wintry shades of gray and deep blue. Restlessness and loneliness struggle incessantly in the artist’s artwork as well as in the models. In a whole new twist, the brand’s signature plaid patterns and prints dialogue with jacquard fabrics and faux fur applications.
Silhouettes are fitted and down coats and bomber jackets wink at the general predilection for casual. Jersey also peeps out of tailored constructions. This collection also represents a step towards sustainable fashion through the use of ecological furs and recycled fabrics that constitute about 70 % of the materials used.
The Shuting Qiu woman is strong, confident and bold but keeps a delicate identity that allows her to stay true to herself. She is not afraid to experiment. Combinations of floral and linear prints coexist in a rich composition of colors and embroidery. A modern romanticism that takes on irregular geometric shapes is inspired by Viola Lanari’s sculptures.
The concept of the unknown and the way humans may face the future enters the capsule of jewelry and accessories. Metal plates, 3D resin creations give substance to the exuberant spirit of this heroine who crosses the limits of geographical boundaries to satisfy her free spirit.
