Fashion has quickly conquered the world of cinema and imposed itself on our screens. More and more fashion houses are producing films and series that celebrate the love affair between fashion and the seventh art.
CinéMode
Jean-Paul Gaultier, the enfant terrible of fashion, has united with directors Matthieu Orléans and Florence Tissot to produce an amazing artistic project. He tries his hand at curating an exhibition at the Cinémathèque. During the retrospective, the film lover selects iconic costumes from his workshops that revolve around the theme of gender, futurism and rebellion. Among the pieces announced, we find the dresses of Marilyn Monroe, Audrey Hepburn or the tuxedo of James Bond. The exhibition “CinéMode” stayed more than 3 months at the Cinémathèque de Paris. It shows the enthusiasm around these two pillars of contemporary art.
Bottega Veneta’s blockbuster film
In 2020, Bottega Veneta teamed up with streaming service MUBI and the film can be seen on the brand’s website. The artistic director, Daniel Lee, reveals through his project what it means to “be a man” today. He celebrates with his film the deconstruction of toxic masculinity and the manly norm.
The brand’s film is part of the movement of abundance of fashion films. Some have been used to showcase collections during Fashion Week.
Saint Laurent Productions
The house of Yves Saint-Laurent confirms its diversification into film production. It launched its eponymous audiovisual production company. Saint Laurent Productions will make its debut at the Cannes Film Festival, which will take place from May 16 to 27, 2023. Anthony Vaccarello, who has been in charge of Saint Laurent collections since 2016, wants to create an artistic outreach.
The company will join the official selection there by presenting Strange Way of Life by Spanish filmmaker Pedro Almodóvar, a 30-minute western-style short film with actors Ethan Hawke and Pedro Pascal in the cast.
Kaiser Karl
After broadcasted countless documentaries about fashion, streaming platforms are preparing TV series about the industry. Disney + is preparing a much-anticipated show about the story of legendary art director, Karl Lagerfeld. The six-episode miniseries will be based on journalist Raphaëlle Bacqué’s investigative novel, Kaiser Karl.
The rivalry between Saint Laurent and Lagerfeld, the love story with Jacques de Bascher, the succession of the house of Chanel. Are among the many topics and intrigues that will take place in the series.
In short, the alliance between luxury houses and the production of films and series has been a successful bet, since the golden age of Hollywood. Bottega Veneta, Yves Saint-Laurent and many other brands are taking part in this tumult of screenings on the silver screen.
