Discover this intense, musical biopic about Bob Dylan, with a brilliant cast and immersive direction.
With A Complete Unknown, director James Mangold revisits the music biopic by focusing on a pivotal period in Bob Dylan’s career. The film opens in 1961, in New York, when the young singer arrives in town armed with his guitar and his inspired lyrics. The film meticulously reconstructs this period, when Dylan was trying to make a name for himself. His path crosses that of legendary folk figures such as Pete Seeger, brilliantly played by Edward Norton.
James Mangold, who has already made a name for himself in the music biopic genre with Walk the Line, portrays a non-conformist and elusive Dylan in search of artistic freedom. Far from being a flattering, conventional biopic, A Complete Unknown paints a portrait of a complex artist, sometimes unpleasant, but always visionary.
A film to the beat of Dylan’s music
One of the great qualities of A Complete Unknown is, of course, its musical treatment. James Mangold doesn’t just insert Bob Dylan’s songs in the background, but integrates them fully into the narrative. Iconic tracks such as Blowin‘ in the Wind, Mr. Tambourine Man, The Times They Are A-Changin’ and Like a Rolling Stone punctuate the key scenes, offering total immersion in the singer’s world. A huge plus is that the actors themselves perform the songs. Timothée Chalamet, in particular, impresses with his involvement, delivering striking vocal and instrumental performances.
A powerful cast at the service of music
In A Complete Unknown, Timothée Chalamet plays a tormented, elusive and sometimes egotistical Bob Dylan, reflecting the artist’s struggle against convention and the expectations of others. Her performance aptly conveys the singer’s discomfort with notoriety.
Monica Barbaro has nothing to envy from her co-star, she is screen-crushing in the role of Joan Baez, the artist’s muse and musical partner. Her charisma and haunting voice make her one of the film’s great revelations. Edward Norton plays a moving Pete Seeger, the father figure of the folk movement, while Boyd Holbrook plays a protective Johnny Cash. Finally, Elle Fanning adds an emotional touch as the key figure in Bob Dylan’s love life.
With its meticulous direction and total musical immersion, A Complete Unknown stands out as a poignant and daring biopic, offering a fascinating look at a living music legend.
