The sequel to Godzilla x Kong hits cinemas this Wednesday 3 April. What did we think of Adam Wingard’s new film? Let us tell you all about it!
The Kaijus are back with Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire on 3 April 2024. Despite a universe full of promise and titans in search of domination, the film directed by Adam Wingard offers us several sub-plots that are unevenly exploited. Let’s take a look!
One film, three storylines!
After the success of Godzilla: Minus One, Warner Bros is once again exploring the Monterverse universe. Adam Wingard is back at the helm of this titanic spectacle, having already directed Godzilla vs Kong in 2021. In this new opus, Kong must join forces with Godzilla to confront a new threat. Before the big Dantesque finale, we follow Kong’s adventures in the depths of Hollow Earth, Godzilla’s adventures on Earth and finally the escapades of the humans.
With so many story arcs, it can be tricky to stay focused on each element. In fact, there’s a certain imbalance between the Kong story and the Godzilla story. While the latter is relegated to the background, the King of the Monkeys finds himself in the most incredible situations on several occasions. A special mention goes to the scene where Kong could (almost) rival Marvel’s Thanos.
On the human side, we enjoyed the relationship between Dr. Ilene Andrews (Rebecca Hall) and Jia (Kaylee Hottle). The two characters are supported by Bernie Hayes (Brian Tyree Henry) and Trapper (Dan Stevens). As funny as they are endearing, the duo does border on caricature, but that’s forgivable.
So what’s our verdict?
Let’s get straight to the point, Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire is first and foremost a piece of entertainment in which monster battles are central to the plot. And there’s no shortage of that! Lovers of this genre will be delighted. It’s the perfect film for having a good time with your family, without getting carried away! However, MonsterVerse aficionados expecting a deeper storyline may be disappointed.
