It’s often said that you have to separate the man from the artist, when in fact it should be said that the man is the artist. David Laurence’s exhibition on David Bowie reveals the legend of the man with a thousand faces.
Entre l’identité et alter ego
L’alter ego est une pratique courante chez les stars, notamment dans la musique et le cinéma. Il permet aux artistes d’explorer d’autres facettes de leur personnalité, de repousser les limites de leur créativité et parfois même de protéger leur vie privée.
Une safe place utilisé par de nombreux artistes comme Beyoncé qui a créé Sasha Fierce pour exprimer une version plus confiante et audacieuse d’elle-même sur scène. Eminem avec Slim Shady est le côté provocateur et irrévérencieux d’Eminem, lui permettant d’exprimer des paroles plus sombres et choquantes. Lady Gaga qui s’est transformée en Jo Calderone, une version masculine d’elle-même, pour brouiller les genres et repousser les conventions.
Concernant Bowie, il a incarné plusieurs alter ego au fil de sa carrière, le plus iconique étant Ziggy Stardust, un extraterrestre rockstar androgyne. Plus tard, il a adopté The Thin White Duke, un personnage plus froid et sophistiqué. Mr Jones long hair est un troisième alter ego qui retrace l’enfant et la célébrité de David Bowie. L’alter ego permet aux artistes d’innover, de s’affranchir des attentes du public et parfois même de gérer leur célébrité d’une manière plus détachée.
David Bowie and his influences
The exhibition explores six themes close to David Bowie’s heart: fashion, cinema, literature, music, theatre and painting. Texts by David Lawrence accompany the photographs, offering a literary perspective on the artist’s career.
More than a hundred previously unpublished photographs are presented, offering a fresh look at the artist and his inspirations. Conceived by David Lawrence, this exhibition immerses visitors in the world of David Bowie through a collection of over 100 never-before-seen photographs. The images, taken by renowned photographers such as Philippe Auliac, Michel Haddi and Denis O’Regan, retrace the highlights of the artist’s career. Visitors can also discover portraits of personalities who influenced Bowie, including Lou Reed, Mick Jagger, Marc Bolan, Iggy Pop and John Lennon.

The ‘David Bowie, Mr Jones’ Long Hair’ exhibition is currently on at Galerie MR8, located at 8, rue des Francs-Bourgeois in the 3ᵉ arrondissement of Paris. Open since 22 March, it will run until 22 June 2025. The exhibition is open to the public every day from 10am to 6pm. Tickets cost from €9 to €18, and booking is mandatory.
