Fancy sipping something other than the umpteenth poorly measured mojito or kitschy piña colada? This summer, cocktails are taking on a whole new dimension, with an emphasis on absolute refinement.
With their floral flavours, signature spirits and chef-like presentations, summer cocktails are being reinvented with style. More than just a thirst-quenching drink, they are becoming a veritable lifestyle accessory, to be enjoyed as much as admired. Here’s a selection of five recipes that are as sophisticated as they are insta-friendly, to be served against a backdrop of soft music, a linen dress and a golden sunset.
1. The Yuzu Spritz, tangy and bright
The Spritz gets an exotic twist with this chic Japanese version. Replace Aperol with yuzu liqueur, add brut prosecco and a dash of chilled sparkling water.
Serve with a thin slice of lime or a few pomegranate pearls for a splash of colour. Light, elegant and wonderfully refreshing.
2. White Negroni, the crystal version of bitterness
Gone is the ruby colour of the classic Negroni: its white version, made with dry vermouth, gin and Suze, offers a subtle, herbaceous taste experience.
Its sleek aesthetic makes it a must for chic aperitifs. Serve it in an old-fashioned glass, garnished with a twist of lemon or a sprig of smoked rosemary.
3. The Pink Grapefruit Margarita
Vibrant and thirst-quenching, this new Margarita combines blanco tequila, fresh grapefruit juice and a hint of agave syrup.
The traditional salt around the glass can be replaced by a mix of sugar, salt and spices for a more daring touch. A cocktail that raises the temperature without weighing down the atmosphere.
4. The French Garden, between garden and glassware
Inspired by the botanical cocktail trend, the French Garden combines cucumber-infused gin, elderflower liqueur, lemon juice and homemade tonic.
All decorated with edible flowers or a sprig of frosted mint. One sip is all it takes to feel like you’re in the gardens of Giverny, cocktail style.
5. The Fleurs & Fruits mocktail, for an alcohol-free summer
Because elegance doesn’t need to be drunk, this mocktail combines cold verbena infusion, raspberry purée and sparkling water flavoured with orange blossom.
Serve in a champagne flute with a few floating berries and sculpted ice cubes for a glamorous version of the summer soft drink.
