To live more peacefully, to stop being in constant and exhausting control, to put aside our selfish desires: many of us feel the need to take a breather and feel more connected to the world around us. Wu Wei, an ancient Chinese concept, could be the solution to this desire to evolve!
Wu Wei is a Taoist concept that literally translates as ‘non-action’ or ‘non-intervention’. The translation is not entirely correct, however, as this practice does not refer to passivity but rather to effortless action in harmony with the natural flow of the universe.
The key principles
Wu Wei is closely linked to the Tao, the Way, which is the force that underpins and guides the universe. The concept calls for acting in accordance with the Tao, which implies ceasing to manipulate things and following the natural course of existence.
In comparison to the movements of water, which find their way without effort, Wu Wei induces spontaneous and natural actions. This means being able to receive, adapt and react to life’s situations without taking control by force.
All of us waste a lot of time and energy dealing with difficulties. In order to calm the mind, the principle of Wu Wei is not to resist these negative events needlessly, but to accept them and integrate them harmoniously into our lives.
Wu Wei in practice
In everyday life, adopting the Wu Wei concept means simplifying your actions, avoiding excess and unnecessary complications. Similarly, when faced with changing situations, we need to learn to remain open and flexible, so that we can deal with them with greater serenity.
From a relational point of view, we are encouraged to let relationships evolve naturally by interacting with others in a natural and spontaneous way. We then let go of any temptation to control or manipulate.
In a professional context, Wu Wei recommends working together smoothly, both with others and with the opportunities that arise.
