“A myth about HIV is that PHAs automatically transmit the virus to their partner and unborn children. If a PHA regularly takes their medications and maintains an undetectable viral level, HIV is untransmissible. These are portraits of T, a.k.a Tim Bartsch (lead singer of Southern Time Band) and his son Aaron. He writes about his journey to fatherhood: “I have had HIV since 1996 and nearly died from AIDS in 2009. My immune system is now healthy, though I still suffer from spinal cord damage due to AIDS.
I feared that no woman would want to be with me and that I had no chance of finding love and procreating. In 2017, I met my future wife. She loved me and did not reject me because of my HIV and disability status. An HIV counselor told us that if my viral load remained undetectable, my partner and I could have unprotected sex. Four years later, both my partner and son are still HIV negative, and the virus is still undetectable.” Tim Bartsch
