A watch is an assembly of components. Hundreds of components. And the current technology (quartz watches) assures us that whatever the watch, we have the right time. So why spend a thousand times more on a luxury watch? Because the time is the same…
In fact, the comparison is not limited to watches, of course. If I told you about cars, would you be as likely to believe that a car is “just” a car ? Or are all the fabrics that make up your suit] the same? No, they are not!
The luxury watch, more than just a utilitarian object
Let’s get back to our luxury watches. A luxury watch represents several things at once. Firstly, a luxury watch is not worn to tell the time. Besides, who asks for the time anymore (except to start a conversation)? Everyone has their smartphone in their pocket – we check it often enough – and our lives are intense enough that the time is no longer really the line we follow to get ahead. We all know what time it is.
The luxury watch is now an object that we own and show off. The time is accessory. We wear a watch because it is a symbol. A symbol of our life, of our way of life, to illustrate the way we live. An ordinary watch is a sad, ordinary, almost depressing watch, precisely because it does only one thing : tell the time.
A luxury watch is something else! I am writing this article now, and I have on my wrist an Omega Speedmaster that my grandfather gave me when I was a teenager. Not to thank me, not to congratulate me on my studies or to celebrate a birthday. My grandfather gave me his watch (a real Omega Speedmaster) because it signified the passing of a feeling. “You are my grandson whom I love and I give you the watch that I wore during my working life, it will remain a symbol of what binds us together.
Not everyone is lucky enough to have a grandfather like mine, but everyone can own an Omega. Regardless of the brand, a luxury watch offers much more than a normal watch (incidentally, it is also an excellent long-term investment).
A timeless symbol
Just like your beautiful car or your new dinner jacket, you will be delighted to show your friends your beautiful watch! Would you dare to raise your arm majestically with your “normal” watch to tell the time? On the other hand, I have no problem showing off my old Omega (connoisseurs will appreciate it, I can assure you), still as accurate as ever despite the years…
So, should you have a sad watch from a banal brand that does only one thing or wear a stylish timepiece, vintage or more modern, that will reflect your vision of life? I don’t hesitate for a moment ! Will you do the same ?
