Between studying, socialising, sport, culture and community engagement, campuses are now seeking to meet needs that extend well beyond the academic framework. An evolution that is gradually redefining the student life.
Student life does not end when students leave the classroom. The campus is also becoming a place for socialising, activities and personal development. This shift reflects a broader reality. Students may face isolation, stress, fatigue or a lack of guidance and support.
In response to these challenges, educational institutions are developing new initiatives. The aim is to create stronger connections between education and everyday life. The campus is therefore becoming a place where students not only study, but also build connections with others.
The campus as a social space in its own right
The social dimension is playing an increasingly important role in the student experience. Student societies, student unions, events and cultural activities all contribute to creating a sense of belonging. They also give students opportunities to meet others outside the classroom.
This approach is based on a simple idea: students do not all naturally engage with the same types of initiatives. A talk focused on mental health may appeal to some, while others may first engage through sport, a creative workshop, a community fundraiser or a cultural event.
The campus is therefore becoming a space with multiple uses. It can host sporting activities, community initiatives, spaces for self expression and opportunities to connect with student societies.
A student experience that goes beyond studying
This shift is accompanied by a broader understanding of student quality of life. The Oh My Care programme, deployed across 26 campuses within the SKOLAE group and reaching around 22,000 students, reflects this trend. Its programme is structured around five areas: health and vitality, sport and energy, engagement and solidarity, personal development, and creativity and social connections.
Its 2026 to 2027 programme includes key moments focused on integration, prevention, solidarity, mental health, engagement and creativity.
The aim is therefore not simply to keep students occupied outside their classes. It is about creating an environment where they can access resources, develop their independence and build meaningful connections. The campus is gradually becoming a living space in its own right.
A new definition of student life
Studying also means finding your place within a shared environment. Sport, culture, community engagement and social interaction all contribute to this experience. The campus is therefore becoming a space that supports a generation for whom education represents only one part of everyday student life.
