Between the salt from the sea, the chlorine from the pool and the sun, our hair tends to become dry and rough – everything we hate! While it’s easy to look after your complexion and the health of your skin by simply applying sun creams and moisturisers, mane require a little more maintenance.
Basic protection principles
To protect your hair from the harmful effects of the sun’s UV rays, the best advice is to wear a hat or scarf. At the same time, we recommend applying hair sprays or oils containing a UV filter. These precautions are the first line of defence against dull mane.
To combat salt water and chlorine, rinse your mane with fresh water before and after swimming. Before, it reduces the absorption of chlorine and salt. Afterwards, it eliminates the residue. For the more determined, there’s also the bathing cap option. It may not be glamorous, but it’s a very effective solution.
Caring for your mane
Moisturising your hair is essential to combat summer’s harsh elements. To do this, we recommend applying a hair mask or deep-penetrating conditioner such as conditioner once or twice a week.
For more natural moisturising treatments, you can opt for oils such as argan oil or coconut oil, which simply need to be left on for around twenty minutes on wet or dry hair.
Reducing damage to the mane also involves gentle brushing. We recommend using a soft bristle brush (boar bristles are best) or a wide-tooth comb when detangling.
Similarly, take advantage of the summer to let your mane dry naturally. A few weeks’ break from the hairdryer or straightening iron will do it a world of good!
If the health of your hair is your summer’s number 1 priority, give it more specific care with leave-in products (spray or cream). Finally, trimming the ends more regularly at this time of year will help prevent split ends and keep your mane healthy.
